Real Madrid should reconsider the idea of selling Luka Jovic as many reports state that club wants Erling Haaland of Borussia Dortmund

After a horrific 2018/19 season, Real Madrid seemed to have finally found a back-up to Karim Benzema and a prolific goalscorer in Luka Jovic of Eintracht Frankfurt. The Serbian international was one of the best forward’s that season as he scored 17 goals in the Bundesliga and 10 goals in the UEFA Europa League. His performances with the German side saw him earn a spot in the Bundesliga Team of the Year and in the UEFA Europa League Team of the Year.

His performances caught the attention of several clubs and it was rumoured that Real Madrid and Barcelona were the frontrunners for the Serb. However, Los Blancos managed to sign the young striker for 60 million euros on a six-year contract. Jovic even described the move to the Santiago Bernabeu as a dream come true for him as he idolised the Spanish giants when he was a child.

Unfortunately, Luka Jovic’s move to Real Madrid has not gone as planned for the club nor for the player. In his debut season, the Serb managed to play just 430 minutes in La Liga from which he scored two goals thus averaging a goal every 215 minutes.

So far this season, Jovic has clocked in 149 minutes in La Liga and is yet to score or assist. It is a clear indicator that the Serb lacks confidence given the fact that he just played 579 minutes in the Spanish league in one and a half seasons. Jovic was given back to back starts against Real Betis and Real Valladolid, however, his performance against the latter was only notable. Many have even written the 22-year-old off as a flop signing and so on. But in reality, Jovic has not had ample chances to settle in and prove his worth.

His performances with Serbia in the Nations League this year is proof that he is still a lethal striker. In just 3 appearances, Jovic scored 3 goals for the national team and provided two assists. The 22-year-old scored a brace against Russia and was heavily involved in the build-up play as well for his side. Unfortunately, his hot-red form could not be seen in the Madrid jersey as the player tested positive for COVID-19 upon his return to the Spanish capital.

Jovic has fully recovered and did train with the squad ahead of the Sevilla clash. It is time for Real Madrid and Zinedine Zidane to trust the Serbian striker given the fact that the club paid 60 million euros just a year ago for his services. It is quite obvious that Real signed the former Bundesliga man as a long term prospective player since the club offered and agreed to a six-year contract with Jovic.

Although the name of Erling Haaland continues to loom the Santiago Bernabeu and reports suggest that Real will make a move for the Norwegian in the summer of 2022 when his 75 million euro release clause will be activated. However, the club must consider offering Jovic several more opportunities before discarding the Serb for the Dortmund man in 2022. This season and the next could possibly be a make or break for Luka Jovic and his career at the Bernabeu.
