Real Madrid faces a complicated situation over the contract renewal of Lucas Vazquez. The winger’s contract is set to expire next summer in June.

Real Madrid turned up in the do-or-die fixture against Borussia Monchengladbach in the UEFA Champions League by sealing their qualification into the Round of 16 and finishing the group stage as leaders of Group B. Two goals from Karim Benzema in the first half of the fixture was sufficient for Real to clinch their three crucial points against the Germans, however, apart from Benzema’s efforts on goal, there were a few other players who deserve recognition and praise for their performance.

Lucas Vazquez in particular had a phenomenal night against Borussia Monchengladbach. Although Dani Carvajal was deemed fit for the fixture, Zinedine Zidane opted to play Vazquez instead, as the Madrid Derby is up next and the fresh legs of Carvajal are what Madrid will require on the right flank.

Vazquez who has been deputized as the make-shift RB so far this season had managed to neutralize the threat from Marcus Thuram that played a crucial role in keeping a clean sheet in the Champions League. However, despite his worthy performance, the versatile Spanish footballer faces an uncertain future at Los Blancos.

Vazquez is on a contract until the summer of 2021 as his contract expires next June with Real Madrid.  There have been rumours claiming that the club is negotiating a deal but recently there seems to be no progression at all. Having said that, the player himself is not too optimistic about a possible renewal

"Renewal is a complicated issue . We will see what happens. I dedicate myself to working every day and I have a clear conscience. In football sometimes it does not depend on one party and I am very happy to be at Real Madrid,"

The 29-year-old certainly deserves a contract renewal since he always plays his heart out irrespective of the position he’s been asked to play in. Vazquez is a utility player that Real requires now and will certainly in the future as well. Hopefully, the club and the player come to an agreement soon enough, however, as of now, there has been no progression.
