5. Casemiro

We can say that he was easily the most important midfielder during the 2019-20 season. His performances were extraordinary and after a horrid 2018-19 season, he reinstated his position as the world’s best defensive midfielder.

The fact that he is the lowest on this list would be an injustice to his importance to the team, for his presence in midfield provides an armour to the backline while his runs into the opposition box always create danger.

His defensive contributions ensured that the defence kept clean sheet after clean sheet and ground out narrow wins. Not just that, but his inputs on the other side of the pitch were crucial to the team winning the league. Who can forget that Karim Benzema backheel assist for Casemiro’s goal against Espanyol post the pandemic break at the end of the 2019-20 season? He has currently scored goals in three straight home games.

Yes, there was a dip in form at the beginning of the 2020-21 season, but he has overcome the lean patch to once again become an invaluable asset to the team. That is exactly what makes Casemiro the player he is. If Real Madrid are to achieve big things in 2021, Casemiro will undoubtedly have a big part to play.
