Real Madrid center midfielder Luka Modric has signed an extension and could very well play at a high level for a few more years. But who would be next?

Luka Modric is the greatest midfielder of our generation. If there were any doubts about this statement, the Real Madrid No. 10 has removed those doubts with his sensational performances at the age of 35 in the 2020-2021 season. It is not a stretch to say that on a team boasting the likes of Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos, Modric has been the best player in the XI week after week.

Los Blancos have yet to agree to extensions with Sergio Ramos and Lucas Vazquez, who have also been instrumental this season, but they have finally come to terms with Modric. It is an obvious move, an important move, and a necessary move for Real’s short-term future.

On the pitch, Modric is massive. We don’t need to spend too much time convincing you of the virtues of “Lukita” after the whistle blows. But off the pitch, he is also vital as a leader and veteran presence in the squad.

According to Manu de Juan of AS, Luka Modric is Martin Odegaard‘s mentor in the Real Madrid first team. Odegaard was one of La Liga’s top players for Real Sociedad last season, and while Real will ease him slowly into the mix in 2020-2021, he is eventually expected to be a true superstar player at the Santiago Bernabeu. That has been his destiny since signing as a 16-year-old and taking his lumps on various loan spells.

And who better to succeed Modric than the left-footed Norwegian? Per AS, that’s exactly the plan Real Madrid have for life after Modric. The former Ballon d’Or winner will mentor Odegaard for the years they will be together in the squad, and the hope is that by then, Odegaard will have picked up what he needs to know and will lead the next generation of Madridistas from midfield.

The 5 players Real Madrid should have never sold. dark. Next

Make no mistake, nobody will ever replace Modric one-for-one. You cannot even put that pressure on a player, even someone as talented as Odegaard. But Odegaard has the traits, the technical class, and that special X-Factor to be the next generation for Real Madrid.
