Real Madrid raise their standard behind Lucas Vazquez

Real Madrid seem to play their best football in two circumstances. Firstly, when they are going up against strong opposition. And then secondly, when they are coming back from a disappointing performance.

This 2-0 win over Celta Vigo was no different in both cases. Vigo were in good form coming into this fixture and one of the teams to watch in La Liga, especially with Iago Aspas leading the league in goal contributions. Real Madrid were also coming off a disappointing performance on Wednesday night against Elche, drawing 1-1 on the road in a real letdown that snapped a streak of six straight wins.

Los Blancos got back to their winning ways at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano, though, and it’s no surprise that Lucas Vazquez was the most impressive player on the pitch. This season, Vazquez has been the one showing the most urgency when Real need it, and his sprints and overall effort on both ends of the pitch were matched by his two goal contributions. He did everything he could to make sure Celta Vigo did not score but Los Blancos were able to twice.

Vazquez deserves effusive praise for both his efforts in this win and for his work this season in helping Real Madrid find another gear when necessary. Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Casemiro, Nacho, Dani Carvajal, Marco Asensio, and Raphael Varane were also excellent, but Vazquez was undeniably the star of the show. He has been a revelation this season.
