Is Lucas Vazquez now indispensible?

There were at least a handful of great performances in this 2-0 win over Celta Vigo, but Lucas Vazquez was the player who impressed Madridistas the most. He claimed the official Man of the Match award after providing the opening goal with his head and then an assist for Marco Asensio’s second-half goal.

Vazquez being involved in both goals is just poetic justice at this point, and I relish the fact that he has made such a fool out of me for doubting him severely in the 2019-2020 season. I type that sentence out in full honesty and transparency, because, well, he deserves the praise and for me to be mocked for my lack of belief.

What stands out the most to me about Vazquez is the way he covers ground with purpose. It’s one thing to light up a heat map and get a reputation for being “scrappy”, but it’s another thing entirely to be consistently in the right place at the right time. His goal, for example? Right place, right time.

Vazquez can play anywhere on that right flank for Real Madrid. He will cross, he will press, he will drop deep, he will defend, he will harass, he will annoy, and, most of all, he will produce. Let me say that last phrase again. He will produce – two goals, two assists, and still more to come.
