HE IS VERY SHALLOW FROM A TACTICAL STANDPOINT

Zidane’s achievements in his Real Madrid career cannot be undermined, but it’s fair to say that he did so with a silver-lining of a world-class squad. The former player was never a tactical genius, even in his first and highly successful tenure at the club. His man-management was what brought in the goods to the club.

In his second tenure, Zizou has faced the brunt for not having a squad as good as before. What’s worse is that he has struggled to adopt a different tactical system in the absence of players who were at the peak of their powers between 2016 and 2018. His defensive mindset won Madrid the league last season, but that too seems to have disappeared now.

Against low-block sides, Los Blancos are usually out of ideas and caught playing side passes and numerous crosses in the final third. Players like Luka Jovic, who can attack those balls were shown the door and Casemiro, who is a defensive midfielder has to be lurking inside the box to get a connection onto those aerial balls, which are cleared more often than not.
