Real Madrid are coming off three disappointing results. First, they failed to score any goals in a draw with Osasuna. Then, they were knocked out of the Spanish Supercup after a frustrating attacking performance against Athletic Club, whom they defeated 3-1 weeks prior. And finally, Los Blancos hit a new nadir with a 2-1 loss to third-division side Alcoyano in the Copa del Rey.

This weekend, Real Madrid will face Deportivo Alaves – another team Los Blancos struggled offensively against, losing 2-1 to them on Nov. 28.

Nothing less than a win will satisfy the club, as Zinedine Zidane’s position is once again in some doubt. But a win against Alaves won’t be enough. Real Madrid must also find good form in the ensuing La Liga matches, otherwise they can kiss the league goodbye. Atletico Madrid are already up seven points with a game in hand.

Let’s take a look at three star players who must lead the way for Real Madrid with Levante, Huesca, Getafe, and Valencia also coming up before the opening Champions League knockout stage fixture in late February against Atalanta.

A turnaround is achievable for Los Merengues, but there is a lot of work that must be done. As we saw in December, Real must rely on its experienced stars to carry them.
