1. Reinier Jesus – Borussia Dortmund

Reinier Jesus is the fourth Brazilian purchased by Real Madrid in the last 3 seasons, which doesn’t come as a surprise given Juni Calafat’s ability to scout some fantastic South Americans, and considering Florentino Perez’s obsession for the next Neymar. But this time Perez didn’t go for the next Neymar, he went for the next Kaka. Reinier, who was signed as an 18-year-old in January 2020 for a sum of 30 million, was called the “Next Kaka” by his countrymen due to the similarities in their gameplay.

Reinier was sent to Castilla after his arrival, where he did very well. But his season was cut short, as Segunda B was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and he couldn’t train with the first-team in summer as planned due to regular muscular injuries.

In the summer of 2020, he was signed by BVB Dortmund on loan for two years. This sounded an exciting deal due to Dortmund’s reputation for developing young talents, but soon this loan deal turned into a disaster. Reinier got only 136 minutes to play in the first half of the season and didn’t get a single start.

In the beginning, this didn’t look surprising because Reiner had to contest with the likes of Erling Haaland, Jadon Sancho, Thorgan Hazard, Julian Brandt, Gio Reyna, and Marco Reus for minutes. But his situation quickly developed from “not getting many minutes” to “not getting any minutes”. Even fortune didn’t favor him, as he couldn’t recover from his muscle problems quickly, and he got infected with COVID-19 at a crucial time.

Real Madrid was quite frustrated with his situation, and rightly so because he is a player on whom they had invested 30 million. But the club is to be equally blamed for this case, as they were happy to send Reinier to a club where he would have to face competition with some world-class players to earn minutes.

But out of all this, the most surprising thing is that Reinier himself is OK with his situation. Though Madrid had asked him about any potential termination, he said that he wants to continue at BVB and fight for his place. Even Dortmund has been patient in his case, which can be confirmed by their sporting director Michael Zorc’s words. Reinier’s fighting spirit can be appreciated here, but if his situation doesn’t change, he would be wasting a year of his career, and it would be a terrible idea to continue after that. At the moment, this is the most disappointing loan deal so far, and there’s a need for a change. Let us hope for the best!
