The 4-1 loss put FC Barcelona three more points further in the lead and although Las Blancas dropped to the third spot of the table, Real Madrid Femenino are only five points behind.

Here’s a look at the current table standings for the top five positions:

FC Barcelona                39
Levante UD                   37
Real Madrid Fem.        34
At. Madrid Fem.           34
Madrid CFF                    34

In order for Real Madrid to stay in the race, they will desperately need to pick up points in the next three matches before facing heavy hitters, Atletico Madrid and Levante UD.

With two home matches versus Valencia (Feb. 7) and RCD Espanyol (Mar. 7) and one match away versus Sevilla FC, Las Blancas should perform quite well and are expected to pick up a majority of the nine points, if not all.

In their previous meetings in the first half of the season, Real Madrid won dominantly over both Sevilla FC (5-2 at home) and RCD Espanyol (8-1 away).

Real Madrid Femenino will face Valencia next weekend

Valencia will prove to be a more balanced fight on the pitch; however, they are coming into Sunday’s matchup slightly banged up, coming off 1-1-1 in their previous three matches, and conceded four goals to their six goals scored.

In their previous meeting, the clubs each took a point after a 1-1 draw at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium.

Real Madrid will travel to Valencia for Sunday’s meeting and Las Blancas will have to make a defining impact to keep Valencia down and avoid giving up points.

KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH: Ellen Jansen and Candela Andujar have been major playmakers for the Valencia side. Jansen has six goals and four assists on the season while Andujar has four goals and two assists. Collectively the duo has been responsible for 16 of the club’s 27 goals on the season.

Real Madrid will need to be aggressive on their backline to shut down this attack to keep Valencia down and avoid dropping any points

RCD Espanyol and Sevilla both have had their struggles over their last few matches as well which veer the advantage toward las Blancas.

Sevilla has not won a match in their last four matches (0-2-2) and only scored one goal while conceding five. RCD Espanyol has shown a little more life although, not by much – they have only won one game over their last four matches and scored three goals while conceding seven.

On paper, these three matches appear to have guaranteed success for Las Blancas, however, in football nothing is guaranteed. Real Madrid confidence is bruised after their loss this weekend, but the season is not over, and the title race is just heating up.

Las Blancas need to see success in these three matches to rebuild their confidence before heading into tough battles with Atletico Madrid and Levante UD in the coming weeks. Dropping points is not an option if Real Madrid want to remain in the fight for their first league title.
