The January 2021 transfer window has come to a close, as Real Madrid loaned out two talented attacking players in Martin Odegaard and Luka Jovic. There was some speculation that Vinicius Junior could be headed out on loan, but Los Blancos wisely decided to hold onto the left winger, who can still play an important role in the side before the season’s end.

That said, Vinicius has some work to do. The young Brazilian winger has been a disappointment in recent months after a hot start to the season in which he scored goals against Real Valladolid and Levante. Vini has underperformed his xG by more than any other player on the team, yet it’s also worth noting that only top goal-scorer Karim Benzema has a higher xG than Vini.

His stock has fallen due to head-scratching errors, including a few particularly ghastly ones in the loss to Alcoyano.

According to a report from Manu Sainz of AS (report in Spanish), Real Madrid no longer see Vinicius Junior as off-limits in a transfer, which was their stance last summer. Per AS, Real are willing to sell Vinicius in the summer 2021 transfer window in order to generate more income during this pandemic.

Real Madrid would be better off loaning Vinicius Junior as opposed to selling

It would be tough to see Vinicius go, because he has the potential to become a star for Real Madrid. At the same time, Los Blancos quietly have a crowded situation developing on the wings. Takefusa Kubo and Brahim Diaz are promising loanees, while Rodrygo Goes and Eden Hazard are the ideal starters. Marco Asensio is still there, and even if Lucas Vazquez does not return, Sergio Arribas could be ready to fill his spot, too.

That means there are six other wingers to choose from. Losing Vinicius could hurt Real’s depth on the left-hand side, but they could just as easily call up on Rodrygo on the left whenever Hazard cannot start. Furthermore, while Real cannot be expected to sign Kylian Mbappe or another forward this summer, they could actually use Vinicius to acquire Mbappe.

It would be more ideal for Real Madrid to stick with Vinicius. Instead of transferring him to raise money, they could loan him out and let him regain his confidence and truly develop with weekly game time. Otherwise, we could be headed for a situation where Real sell Vini for lower than market value then rue their mistake five years later when he fulfills his potential.
