Real Madrid had recorded 19 clean-sheets in the 2019/20 LaLiga season. Thibaut Courtois won the Zamora trophy, and every defender in Real Madrid’s backline were in top form. Statistically, Real Madrid had the best defence in Europe, and they relied more upon their defensive strength to win their 34th LaLiga title than their attack. At one point in time, it seemed like Real Madrid’s plan to win a game was to score a goal by hook or crook, but to defend every attacking move initiated by the opponents. This plan was clearly visible in those many 1-0 victories (Atletico Madrid-esque scorelines).

But this season, Real Madrid are struggling defensively. Real Madrid conceded just 25 games in 38 league games of the last season, but they’ve already conceded 19 goals in 21 league games in this season, till this point in time. And they’ve been able to record just eight clean-sheets in the league this season, and two more in UEFA Champions League. The defense looked very shaky at times, and the confidence which was visible in their faces last season isn’t visible now.

Let’s have a look at the reasons behind Real Madrid’s defensive issues this season and their drop in clean sheets.
