Real Madrid Femenino: 5 takeaways coming out of the February international break
Real Madrid Femenino currently sit third in Liga Iberdrola and are squarely in the mix for a Champions League spot in 2021-2022. With a win on Sunday afternoon against Real Sociedad, who are seventh in the league, Las Blancas can move back into second place ahead of Levante. Currently, Levante are three points ahead of Real, but Real have a game in hand and the same goal differential.
Following the February international break, Kosovare Asllani and Real Madrid will be ready to claim the full three points over the weekend. But the break also gives us a chance to do a little reset and look at what we have learned so far in this thrilling 2020-2021 campaign.
Kosovare Asllani’s new role for Real Madrid
My colleague Yash had a Twitter thread providing statistical evidence and describing Kosovare Asllani’s new role as Real Madrid’s striker. Asllani is generally at her best as an attacking midfielder, having led Sweden to plenty of success in this role.
For Las Blancas, she and Jessica Martinez have formed a great duo up top, or the No. 9 has played in the middle of a 4-3-3 with Marta Cardona and Sofia Jakobsson.
Either way you spin it, Asllani has had to take a back seat creatively in order to prioritize scoring goals for the team. And the result is that she has scored 12 goals so far this season – more than double anyone else on the team.
However, Asllani has no assists. Ideally, Las Blancas would find a way to get more out of Asllani’s all-around ability. She’s even a credible defensive player in a midfield role. But for now, Real’s star player is leading the way with her eye for goal.
