RB Alvaro Odriozola

Whereas Sergio Ramos is indispensable to Los Blancos and a late-career position change could enable Marcelo to keep his place in the Real Madrid squad, Alvaro Odriozola is a defender whom Madridistas would not mind seeing go in the 2021 summer transfer window.

Odriozola isn’t a bad player, but at 25 years old, he is no longer a prospect. And because he’s no longer a prospect, Real Madrid have much higher expectations for Odri than they did when he first joined Real Sociedad.

Although he is fast and has the potential to help in the attack, Odriozola has been a massive liability defensively in 2020-2021. He has made such basic errors that Lucas Vazquez, who is not a natural right back, has fully taken over from him as the top backup to Dani Carvajal.

Odriozola has not been worth the 30-35 million euros that Real Madrid paid to Real Sociedad for him in the summer 2018 transfer window. He can call himself a treble-winner after spending half of the 2019-2020 campaign with Bayern Munich, but, in truth, he was not much of a contributor to Die Roten either.

There is talent in Odriozola, but he is a player for a team lower in the La Liga table. Los Blancos should try to keep Vazquez behind Carvajal as the backup and seek a transfer destination for Odriozola in the summer.
