2. Real Madrid

I want to believe that Real Madrid will win their 35th La Liga title, because we have not seen this team at their best this season as often as we’d like. When they have been at full strength, they have dominated the two other top teams in this league with a 2-0 win over Atleti at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano and a 3-1 win at the Camp Nou.

The problem is that titles aren’t won in a couple of games; they are won with consistency across a full season. Real have too many depth question marks and too many issues against lower-table sides for me to feel confident in them winning the league. It’s close, but I still have to give the edge to Atleti despite their recent struggles. The minutes given to the likes of Marco Asensio and Mariano Diaz don’t exactly help Los Blancos’ case either.

1. Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid are gearing up for a title race for the ages, but Atelti have one slight edge. Even if they lose this weekend at the Wanda, they have done a much better job of taking care of the matches they are supposed to win than Los Merengues. Levante aside, Diego Simeone has held his end of the bargain far more often than not.

Los Rojiblancos have a world-class defense, as usual. Their midfield is hard-nosed and features a unique player with 15 goal contributions in Marco Llorente, who is a very familiar face to Madridistas.

But the real difference that has given Atleti a boost in 2020-2021 is the attack. Angel Correa is overlooked and a key to this team, but he’s overlooked because of the sensational play by Joao Felix and Luis Suarez. The latter is right there with Lionel Messi as a favorite in the Pichichi race and has definitely transformed Atleti’s chances since making the summer switch from Barça.
