Atletico Madrid won’t be blanketed again

In the last four head-to-head meetings between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, Los Rojiblancos have failed to score. They did not score in Fall 2019 at the Wanda in a 0-0 draw, they were shut out of the Spanish Supercup Final across 120 minutes, and they have fallen 1-0 and 2-0 in their most recent road matches against Los Merengues.

But something tells me Diego Simeone, in spite of his team’s recent struggles, will find the formula against former goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois this Saturday, putting the pressure on Real Madrid to score twice against his vaunted defense in order to get all three points.

Atleti’s attack is so much better in 2020-2021 after they signed Luis Suarez from fellow La Liga title contenders FC Barcelona. The Uruguayan legend has 16 goals in the league this season, second to only former teammate Lionel Messi. And we know how dangerous he can be to Los Blancos, in spite of how poorly he played against the Merengue club earlier this season.

As much as I want to believe Real Madrid will pitch another shutout against their great crosstown rivals and that Courtois will get another clean sheet over on Jan Oblak, I could see Suarez scoring or even Marco Llorente breaking Madridista hearts. And then there is Angel Correa, who is massively underrated with 10 total goal contributions thus far in 2020-2021.
