CM Fede Valverde

Fede Valverde could play a more attacking role this weekend against Atletico Madrid due to the injuries at striker, as Zinedine Zidane could take advantage of his underrated eye for the goal, which included three in limited action before his injuries.

The Uruguayan played well off the bench against Real Sociedad on Monday in his return from his most recent injury, starting the move for Vinicius’ game-tying goal by nailing a picture-perfect backheel pass for assist-provider Lucas Vazquez.

Valverde is one of the best all-around midfielders in the game and has been a star against Atleti in the past. Don’t be surprised if he impresses Diego Simeone again on Matchday 26.

LB Ferland Mendy

Ferland Mendy made headlines throughout the month of February for his attacking prowess, as the former Lyon man first scored against Getafe and then hit a wonderful game-winner against Atalanta in the Champions League. Mendy could’ve had a third, but he was ruled offside against Valencia.

On Sunday, he’ll have an interesting battle with England international Kieran Trippier, who seems ready to start for Los Rojiblancos. Trippier is one of Atleti’s top players now and gave Real fits last season at the Wanda Metropolitano. Mendy will have to work hard to keep him under wraps while also dealing with the threats of Joao Felix and the underrated Angel Correa.

Plus, Mendy will need to be perfect when playing out of the back and supporting Kroos, who will be under plenty of fire from Saul, Koke, and the rest of Atleti’s hard-nosed and energetic midfield.
