Raphael Varane

Raphael Varane is arguably one of the best center-backs in the world. The world cup winner alongside captain Sergio Ramos has set a standard in defense for Real Madrid and losing him could be a huge blow for Los Blancos’s defense that already has been struggling in recent days.

Reportedly, he has been linked to clubs like Manchester United, PSG, and Chelsea. According to Samuel Luckhurst’s report in Manchester Evening News, Varane is unhappy with the amount of money he is making in comparison to his teammates at Madrid. Per Luckhurst, Los Blancos are pessimistic about signing Varane to an extension.

Varane has been vital in defense and world cup winning center-backs are hard to come by. He is arguably the best at reading the game, intercepting, and handy in the air. Moreover, in the absence of both Ramos and Benzema, he has been handed down the captain’s armband. Even in these heightened responsibilities, he has kept his nerves and proven time and again what a fantastic leader he is.

The Frenchman’s contract expires after the 2021-22 season and if Real Madrid cannot persuade him to stay, they may have to sell him this summer window to get anything back. Real can fetch upwards of 50 million euros for the big defender. But, his departure could be a huge blow for Madrid. If the two parties do not agree on a deal, then Zidane needs to scout for replacements already.
