Real Madrid: Ranking the top 5 players for the month of March
5. Lucas Vazquez
Lucas Vazquez has mainly been a right-winger throughout this career. But this season, he has been playing as a right-back consistently. And he is filling in for a player like Dani Carvajal, who is one of the best right-backs in the world, if not the best. I had my own doubts about Lucas at the beginning of this season, but he has proved everyone wrong by performing brilliantly week in week out, and he did the same during March.
He has been a menace down the right flank, excelling at both ends of the pitch. He has been highly crucial for Real Madrid and has performed well against every team irrespective of the strength of the opposition. He is usually one of the most underappreciated Real Madrid players along with Nacho, but right now both of them deserve all the appreciation on the earth.
One thing which has impressed me the most is his adaptability. Against Atleti he struggled against a faster and stronger Yannick Carrasco in the initial stages of the game, but he came back strong to get the better of the Belgian international. In the all-important Atalanta tie, he and Varane had trouble with the Atalanta press, but once he found the key to break through the press there was no stopping him. The way he understood the game and adapted quickly was really great.
He got to claim two assists from the five games, including the last-minute cut back to Vinicius against Real Sociedad, which salvaged a point for Real Madrid. It’s good to see him perform so well, but it hurts to know that Lucas will be leaving this summer as his contract expires in June. We can just be thankful to him for his valuable contribution to Real Madrid all these years.
