Real Madrid have three players with contracts expiring at the end of the 2020-2021 season. While things with Luka Modric, thankfully, seem to be settled, the futures of Sergio Ramos and Lucas Vazquez remain uncertain.

Madridistas are anxiously waiting for word of Ramos’ renewal, but they should not get their hopes up for Vazquez remaining in Madrid. Both sides have been far apart for quite some time, and there’s a belief that he could be headed to Bayern Munich.

According to the latest update from Tomas Gonzalez-Martin of ABC Deportes, Lucas Vazquez rejected the final contract renewal offer from Real Madrid. The Galician wide man appears to be headed out the door.

To nobody’s surprise, Gonzalez-Martin’s report states that manager Zinedine Zidane tried to push both sides to agree to a move. He has made it no secret of his fondness for Vazquez, who earned his trust even more this season by playing at a high level in must-win games, including the 2-0 Champions League victory over Borussia Monchengladbach.

Lucas Vazquez will be missed by Real Madrid fans if he goes

But that may be the reason for the impasse. Vazquez wanted a pay raise, whereas everyone else has been taking a paycut. Real could not accept this on principle, but Vazquez does have a point. He has been much better in 2020-2021, and he has boosted his value significantly by playing well at the right back position, establishing himself as superior to Alvaro Odriozola.

Vazquez is thus getting better offers from around Europe, meaning he has no reason to take a lower salary at Real Madrid. He loves the club, but he could get more money and play a more fixed role. Since he is heading into his 30’s, it becomes imperative for Vazquez to secure his financial future by taking the best deal available.

Madridistas surely understand this and appreciate what Vazquez has done for this club, whether it’s been his displays at right back this season or his casual twirl of the ball before sinking a vital penalty on the biggest stage.

Vazquez will be missed – and not just by the honorable Zizou. It truly seems like Real Madrid fans are about to witness an end of an era of sorts this summer, as Vazquez is ready to walk.

But on the bright side, another beloved Madridista is expected to stay for longer. Nacho Fernandez will reportedly get a contract extension so that his deal goes beyond the 2021-2022 season. So at least one homegrown role player will be sticking around in the Spanish capital.
