El Clasico win

If Real Madrid did not beat Barcelona this weekend in El Clasico, they could have kissed their title hopes goodbye. It was do-or-die for Los Blancos against their biggest rivals. And for the second year in a row facing this situation, Real did not falter.

They were up against it, of course. Real were without starting center backs Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos. Star right back Dani Carvajal was also out, and his backup Lucas Vazquez went down with an injury in the first half. Real then had to make changes in the second half to keep in mind their big match against Liverpool in mind, as this Clasico was sandwiched between both legs of the Champions League quarterfinals.

But Real Madrid completed the job. They held on for dear life in the end, but you have to say they deserved the three points. With their backs to the wall and injuries mounting, Real did not make excuses. They won a must-win game, putting down Barça for a third straight time, which is a rare occurrence in the history of El Clasico.

Real’s second head-to-head win over La Blaugrana this season means that they moved into first in the table immediately afterward with a vital point separating themselves from Barcelona.

Now, one point is something Barcelona can easily recover from if Real are not careful in their other games. But the win gives Real a key advantage over their rivals. Most importantly, it gives them a chance to win the title. Because had they lost, the alternative would have been that Real would have been well out of the picture. Even a draw would have been devastating. Real needed to prove they are definitively better than La Blaugrana. By winning El Clasico, they have the boost in the table and the boost in morale to go ahead and finish the task of securing a 35th league title.
