Real Madrid are clicking at the right time

There are two things that are true about a Real Madrid side managed by Zinedine Zidane. The first is that they are extremely difficult to defeat in big matches, which is why Zizou has such a great record in the Champions League. And the second is that they tend to play their best football the deeper they go into the season.

We saw the latter case in La Liga last season, as Real recovered from a poor start to the campaign to eventually win the league. And after a rough patch to start this season, we are seeing a similar narrative develop in the final months of the 2020-2021 campaign.

Look at Real’s record over their past 10 La Liga matches. They are currently riding a streak of four straight wins. In total, they have won 8 of their past 10. They are undefeated in this timespan, with their only draws coming against two of the best teams in the league in Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad. And against La Real, they were playing with an undermanned attack, as Karim Benzema was out. Before that, they won every match in February despite Benz’s injury.

Real find a way, and the best part is that the players who were underperforming earlier this season are hitting their best form right now. Specifically, wide forwards Vinicius Junior and Marco Asensio.

We knew they would be crucial to a title push this season in lieu of any offseason additions. Vini had some bright moments but was frustrating fans with basic errors. Meanwhile, Asensio was a regular target of Madridistas’ ire after so many performances that were well below what he is capable of.

But Asensio has scored four goals in his last five appearances. And Vini is playing the ball of his life, having torched both Liverpool and Barcelona. They are helping Real Madrid play at their best, and both their individual resurgences and the overall team’s peak play have Los Blancos in position to finish this title race strong.
