Real Madrid reportedly believe Sergio Ramos has chosen a new club
For those of you who are maintaining confidence that Real Madrid will be able to keep Sergio Ramos for one or two more seasons, a new report acts as a blow to that belief that the logical outcome will win out.
Ramos and Real are currently at the negotiating table for a new contract, as the captain’s current deal runs out at the end of the 2020-2021 season. But negotiations have dragged on. Ramos was supposed to be close to accepting in March or April, but, to date, there is no agreement. Nor a real sign of one.
And now, Jesus Gallego reports on Hora 25 Deportes, via Cadena SER, that Real Madrid believe Sergio Ramos has decided against re-signing. They reportedly feel that Ramos has chosen a different club that has been able to give him a better financial offer.
Is that club PSG? A different club that has been rumored to be interested in Ramos? We shall see. But the PSG rumor has been a difficult one to get a read on, since they do not normally go after players currently signed to Los Blancos. Some big Premier League clubs do not abide by the same restrictions in the transfer market.
Real Madrid can feel less scared about losing Sergio Ramos because of Nacho and Eder Militao
If Ramos were to leave, Real would replace him with a free-agent signing in Bayern Munich’s versatile David Alaba. They are also set to re-sign Nacho Fernandez, who has been tremendous in 2020-2021 when Ramos has been injured. And if Raphael Varane were to join Ramos by leaving this summer with one year left on his deal after 2020-2021, then recent standout Eder Militao would be the one to take his place. The good news is that the above report states that Nacho and Militao will be staying next season.
Nevertheless, while Real have plenty of talent at center back and have to be impressed with Nacho’s and Militao’s recent big-game displays, losing Ramos would hurt. He is a club legend through and through. Ramos is one of the greatest center backs of all time.
Hopefully, it isn’t true that he has chosen a different offer. It’s possible Real’s reported read on the situation is incorrect. But given how long this saga has lasted, it is, sadly, plausible that Ramos has decided to walk away for financial reasons. As disappointing as that would be, I would not say an unkind word about Ramos for what he has done for this club. I hope you feel the same way, too.
