LB Marcelo

Like Isco, Marcelo is a club veteran and highly-regarded player who could be on his way out of Real Madrid. There were rumors he could be sold last summer, but Los Blancos decided to sell the young Sergio Reguilon to Tottenham (with a buy-back included) instead of painfully cutting ties with a true club legend.

It didn’t take long for Madridistas to pan the move, and the criticisms rose after Marcelo cost the team games in the first-half of the season with a series of horrible defensive errors. Clearly, he could no longer be trusted at left back due to his physical decline.

Yet, Marcelo can still be valuable to Real, albeit in a different role. He was great against Getafe a couple of months ago in a playmaking role. As an attacker, Marcelo is an asset due to his technical quality, precise crosses, and creativity. He is one of the most intelligent creators of his time, and Real Madrid can find a way to harness this.

Marcelo’s position with Los Blancos is not 100 percent safe, but he did a lot to help his cause in that match against Getafe. He also quietly played well in another 2-0 win against Eibar. Hopefully, Marcelo sticks around, but he’ll need to have a strong finish to the season, as his wages are not working in his favor.
