Can Victor Chust start more matches for Real Madrid?

Real Madrid were already turning to their backup center backs in the big games against Liverpool and Barcelona, as Sergio Ramos suffered another injury and Raphael Varane has been out due to a positive COVID-19 test. Eder Militao and Nacho Fernandez did an incredible job of stepping up, but the latter could not play against Getafe due to a suspension.

So Zinedine Zidane turned to the unproven Victor Chust, whose only other career start came in the disastrous loss to Alcoyano. That made fans nervous, but those of us who watched the Copa del Rey exit closely recalled that Chust actually played well.

He was also solid for Real Madrid against Getafe, even saving Real an early blunder by making a fantastic goal-saving tackle at the last possible second.

Chust seems to have real potential at the centre back position. He is not bad on the ball, and he has good closing speed defensively. There are some ways Chust could do a better job of positioning himself against players cutting across the box, as Angel gave him some trouble with his quickness in the second half.

But by and large, Real Madrid seem to have something in Chust, who could be a future starter in this league. He needs more playing time, so we’ll see if Zidane can figure out a way to facilitate opportunities for the Castilla captain. It’s tough, since Real have so many good center backs and so little – here’s that phrase again – margin for error.
