Real Madrid center midfielder Luka Modric is 35 years old, but he is still one of the best midfielders on the planet. He is a huge reason why Los Blancos are in the league title race and the Champions League semifinals, and Real are relying on him more than ever this season when looking at how much he has played. The same goes for the Croatian national team.

But Real are starting to realize that all the games are catching up with their players. Modric is still running his lungs out for the team, but he needs rest. Whereas Toni Kroos did not play this weekend against Getafe, Modric started and played the full 90 as the only real midfielder on the pitch to start the match due to Fede Valverde’s absence.

Now, Modric may finally get some well-earned reprieve this week.

According to a report from COPE’s Miguel Angel Diaz, Luka Modric will “almost certainly” get the day off on Wednesday night when Real Madrid face Cadiz on La Liga’s Matchday 31.

Real Madrid could get both Fede Valverde and Casemiro back at Cadiz, making it possible to rest Luka Modric

Real Madrid are out for revenge against another one of their neighbors. Cadiz defeated Los Blancos at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano 1-0 earlier this season in one of the biggest upsets of the 2020-2021 La Liga campaign. Real will hit the road on Wednesday night looking to get the full three points this time.

Having already dropped points over the weekend at Getafe, Los Blancos know their margin for error is that much smaller going forward in a heated league title race with Atletico Madrid and Barcelona. Real’s win over La Blaugrana gave them the leg up in the title race, but the upper hand is fleeting with so few points separating the three powerhouse clubs of La Liga.

Without Modric, Valverde, assuming he does not have COVID-19, would start in his place. Casemiro will be back from suspension, and Kroos is now rested. So if there were a time to give Modric the rest he deserves and, quite frankly, needs, then it very well could be on Matchday 31 at Cadiz. Well, that’s assuming the game still goes through amidst all the European Super League nonsense.
