RW Rodrygo Goes

Rodrygo Goes was not put in a position to succeed over the weekend at Getafe. Due to the absences, Zinedine Zidane was forced to start one of Marco Asensio or Rodrygo Goes in midfield. For some reason, he chose Rodrygo and played him as a right-sided midfielder.

The result was a disaster. Rodrygo, predictably, had no idea what he was doing on either end of the pitch, but especially so on the defensive end. He would often look to pass the ball to Luka Modric immediately, unsure of what to do with the ball so deep in the pitch. And defensively, he had little awareness and would often leave gaping passing lanes for Getafe to pick out between the midfield and defensive lines.

Rodrygo won’t start in the middle of the park on Wednesday night at the Ramon de Carranza. He’ll be a right-sided winger, in all likelihood, across from Vinicius Junior. That’s a good spot for Rodrygo, who is familiar with this position, even if he is technically better on the left.

All Rodrygo needs is one pass or a little bit of space around the penalty box to make a big impact for his team. He has five assists in only 631 La Liga minutes this season.
