Florentino Perez makes ominous statement about Raphael Varane’s future
Real Madrid center back Raphael Varane is one of the best players in the world at his position, but Los Blancos are at risk of losing him this summer. That’s because Varane’s contract will run out at the end of the 2021-2022 season, and if he does not indicate that he wants to re-sign, then Real will have no choice but to sell him. They cannot lose a player of his quality for free, especially since they are short on funds.
Varane is in the midst of another good season with the club, but there have been no indications that he is interested in re-signing. There’s still time for both sides to come to an agreement, but it seems like Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is prepared for him to leave.
Firstly, Real are about to officially sign David Alaba to a five-year deal. He is seen as Sergio Ramos’ replacement, but Real already have Eder Militao and Nacho Fernandez with Victor Chust on the come-up.
In an interview with El Larguero on Wednesday night after the win over Cadiz, Florentino Perez was mostly talking about the European Super League. But he also spoke about some transfer rumors, including Varane’s situation.
Here’s what he said about Varane, via Fabrizio Romano:
Manchester United could be the next landing spot for Raphael Varane
Whereas Perez confirmed a new deal for Luka Modric and spoke a little bit more about the uncertainty with Ramos, he was noticeably terser when discussing the future of his younger superstar center back.
It seems as if Manchester United, Chelsea, PSG, and any other interested club has a real opening to sign the 27-year-old central defender. Surely, Real Madrid will continue to push to sign him to a new contract, but it also seems like Perez sees the writing on the wall. He basically implied, with that quote, that Varane wants to leave.
While Varane is highly successful at Real Madrid both individually and with the team, he may want a new challenge. The Premier League seems to appeal to Varane, with Manchester United consistently linked to the player.
We’ll have to continue to monitor the news for more updates regarding Varane’s contract negotiations, but Perez’s brief quote does not give Madridistas any sort of optimism regarding the French center back’s future.
