La Liga: Ranking the top five 2020-21 Player of the Season candidates

Every La Liga club has played more than 30 matches, and we are heading into the final stretch of the 2020-2021 season. There is a four-way title race fought among Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Sevilla in that order.

As we continue to monitor the title race and agonize over every result, we must also start thinking about the Player of the Season. Last year, Karim Benzema was the most outstanding player of the season, but will he win the award again? He’s undoubtedly among the favorites.

5. Atletico Madrid CM/RM Marcos Llorente

Some may say that Marcos Llorente should be higher, considering his brilliance this season and the fact that Atletico Madrid still lead the league. But is he really more valuable to his team than Iago Aspas or Gerardo Moreno? Or even Karim Benzema? Llorente shares responsibility for the team’s success with Jan Oblak and the defense, as well as game-changing summer signing Luis Suarez.

That said, Llorente is the standout player for Atleti this season and has been one of the best in La Liga. There is a feeling of “the one that got away” from Real Madrid fans – and understandably so. Llorente’s genius movement off the ball and good decision-making on it have led to 11 goals and 10 assists. That’s a contribution any team would love to have in their ranks.
