Real Madrid could be in the market for some defensive help this summer. Although they are close to signing David Alaba, who is an option at center back and left back, they could still have interest in another central defender if both Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane leave. And there are also voids on the flanks, as Dani Carvajal’s latest injury may be a sign that Real must invest more in the position, even if they do end up keeping Lucas Vazquez after all.

Los Blancos won’t have much money to spend, especially if they go all-in for a much-needed goal-scorer. So let’s take a look within La Liga at some realistic and not-so-realistic defensive options that could potentially pique Real’s interest or help in some way.

Villarreal CB Pau Torres

Let’s begin with someone rated highly by many in Pau Torres. The young center back has been one of the best players at his position this season, taking another step forward under new manager Unai Emery. And he’s been an asset in Villarreal’s Europa League run, as the Yellow Submarine could potentially make it into the final after obtaining a 2-1 lead over Arsenal after one leg of play.

Torres would cost near 65 million euros, since that is his release clause. If Villarreal hold firm on that amount of money, then he would not be worth the cost for Real Madrid, especially in light of Eder Militao’s amazing play in April. Nacho Fernandez has also been great, David Alaba is coming in on a high salary, and even Castilla man Victor Chust impressed against Getafe in La Liga.

Still, Torres is just 24 and completing a high-80’s percent of his passes in both league play and the Europa League. He has the quality on the ball and can read the game effectively enough to actually challenge for a starting spot at Real Madrid.

Torres has his drawbacks as a transfer target, but the Spanish international is absolutely someone for Real Madrid to consider this summer.
