Real Madrid right winger Lucas Vazquez is on an expiring contract. At one point, his chances of staying in Madrid seemed slim, because reports indicated that both sides were far away from reaching an agreement financially.

But recent information has changed the situation. Los Blancos appear to be close to signing a new deal with the versatile wide man, realizing that he is indeed very valuable to this team and merits a raise.

Vazquez is a winger by trade, but he was one of the breakout stars of the season at right back, taking over for Dani Carvajal after the incumbent’s injuries. Vazquez himself succumbed to a season-ending injury in El Clasico, but he definitely made his mark before then, including in both Clasicos and a must-win Champions League group stage encounter vs. Borussia Monchengladbach.

There has been a great deal of interest in Vazquez around Europe during his breakout season, as teams around the continent understand how valuable it is to have a player with his versatility and fighting spirit. Those linked suitors have included Europe’s elite, such as Bayern Munich and PSG.

Lucas Vazquez declined Atletico Madrid’s interest in him

But another big club has shown interest in Vazquez, too. One that Real Madrid fans would loathe to see him at and are probably upset they tried to make an audacious attempt to take him away.

According to a report from Juan Jimenez of AS, Atletico Madrid tried to sign Lucas Vazquez. They sent the Galician right winger and right back an offer.

And what did Vazquez do to their offer? Essentially, thanks, but no thanks.

As you’d expect, Vazquez reportedly didn’t even consider the offer from Los Rojiblancos, because he loves Real Madrid too much. Even as he has been prepared to leave to another club for a more fair offer of compensation for his qualities, he was not about to betray Real for Atleti.

Juxtapose that with James Rodriguez, who, for some reason, could not understand why Los Merengues blocked him from transferring to their crosstown rivals.

Madridistas hope Vazquez and Real can come to a contract agreement. All the negative words said about Vazquez have been taken back by fans, who have come to appreciate the 29-year-old in an entirely new light this season. Perhaps his quick decline of Atleti’s overtures will serve to boost his status in the eyes of the fans even further.
