Real Madrid‘s loanees have, largely, not enjoyed successful 2020-2021 seasons. Takefusa Kubo’s loans at Villarreal and Getafe have not worked out as planned, Reinier is still barely playing for Dortmund, Jesus Vallejo’s career remains stagnant in Granada, Dani Ceballos has taken a step back in North London, and even Martin Odegaard and Luka Jovic are sputtering right now.

But two players have managed to get minutes and contribute goals, Brahim Diaz and Borja Mayoral. The latter has the more goals between the Serie A duo, but the former is the one more likely to head back to Real Madrid with a role. Because, well, Roma can more easily purchase Mayoral permanently.

Brahim scored a tremendous goal against Juventus this past weekend. In total, the two-footed forward has found the back of the net six times in all competitions. He hasn’t been a consistent threat for Milan, but the Spanish international has impressed in his first real senior season.

According to a report from Sergio Santos Chozas of AS, Real Madrid “have a lot of faith” in Brahim Diaz. However, there is only one way he can make his way back to the Santiago Bernabeu next season, and that’s if he has an “important” role in the squad.

Brahim Diaz is probably not ready to return to Real Madrid

“Important” is a nebulous term, but for those of you FIFA players out there, I think Brahim and Madrid are not defining this as rigidly as the video game suggests. But Brahim would want to be a role player who gets similar minutes to what he’s earning in Milan right now. Real, for their part, should want the same. They were the ones who urged Brahim to go on loan this past summer, because they know he needs the game time.

Real Madrid have question marks at winger, but Brahim is not ready to answer them yet. As we have seen this season at Milan, he is talented but not yet ready to be a regular rotational piece for a club like Real. Because he has not asserted himself as a start in Milan, though he has played well enough that the Rossoneri should want him back. Whether they actually do or not, remains to be seen.

Still, Brahim has shown enough this season to earn another quality loan spell in 2021-2022, which will be an even more important year in his development.
