Real Madrid: Five takeaways from a 4-1 win over Granada
Real Madrid did not have it easy against Granada, in spite of the 4-1 scoreline. Because Granada had their chances in the second half, threatening to get back into the match. Just as it seemed like they would make it 2-2, Real put two chances away and rode Thibaut Courtois’ brilliance to hold the home side to just that one goal.
The win means Real are still in the title race, as any dropped points would be disastrous. Before we think of the trip to San Mames this weekend, let’s look at the takeaways from this important, mostly convincing victory at Los Carmenes.
Thibaut Courtois distinguishes himself again
In a game in which Real Madrid put four goals past Rui Silva, their own goalkeeper managed to stand out as one of the top performers on the pitch. Because without Thibaut Courtois, Real may have been headed for a nail-biter despite their own chance-creation.
Courtois made about four world-class plays. One of them was a great save on Luis Suarez that was shrouded by Jorge Molina hitting home an easy follow-up for Granada’s lone goal. Courtois made two more world-class saves, including one to deny Suarez on a breakaway by making himself big (not hard to do, right?)
But honestly? Courtois’ best play wasn’t even a save. He made this ingenious play in which he broke up an attack by coming out a little bit to the edge of his box. But instead of securing the ball, he dropped it on purpose, realizing he’d cede a free kick and booking by handling the ball outside his own box. He dropped it at the right time, turned his body around, and made sure to secure the ball so that his hands were still in the box.
Courtois is the best in the world. A performance like this is confirmation of his excellence.
