And then there is Plan B. For the most part, Erling Haaland has been viewed as the top alternative to Kylian Mbappe, but it seems like the world-class striker is more likely in 2022 due to Dortmund’s unwillingness to part ways with the player. And it makes sense. If they make the Champions League, which now looks plausible, they really can’t afford to lose Sancho and Haaland in the same window.

Last summer, they held firm with Sancho despite heavy interest from Manchester United, so they could do the same with Haaland, whose own “handshake release clause” was always only set to be valid in 2022 anyway.

So Sancho could be an interesting option for Real Madrid if Mbappe is off the table. Sancho would probably cost under 100 million euros, and Los Blancos could realistically raise the funds to sign him.

I have Sancho listed as a right winger, but he can play on either side. At Real Madrid, the right side is the bigger issue, since Eden Hazard, Vinicius Junior, and Rodrygo Goes are all better on the left. The only true right winger is Marco Asensio, with Rodrygo as the backup option.

Sancho is world-class. He goes under the radar because of the well-deserved Mbappe and Haaland hype trains. But we cannot forget he had 17 goals and 16 assists in the 2019-2020 Bundesliga and has been sensational again in 2021.
