Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos is going through a rough year. He has suffered three significant injuries, which have prevented him from getting into a rhythm and playing at a high level. Though he is trying to return in time to close the season against Villarreal, he has been unable to help the team in the LaLiga title race and made an ill-advised decision to return too early from injury when Real were eliminated from the Champions League by Chelsea.

Beyond the injury issues, Ramos still has not signed a new contract with Real Madrid. He will become a free agent at the end of the 2020-2021 season, and Madridistas fear that he may have designs on joining PSG to win a Champions League title with them as his next challenge.

The next blow to Ramos could be missing the European Championships, which could very well be the final Euros of his storied career. Ramos is one of the greatest players in Spanish national team history, and he even went for the appearance record at the expense of his health in March.

According to a report from MARCA, Spanish national team manager Luis Enrique may not call up Sergio Ramos for the Euros.

Sergio Ramos’ recent injuries could give Luis Enrique pause

That seems like a huge surprise, but reportedly Enrique is worried about Ramos’ fitness due to all the injuries he has picked up this year. And Ramos did not do himself any favors by rushing back from injury twice, leading two new absences.

Ramos is an important player for Spain, too. He is their captain and forms a strong partnership with Villarreal up-and-comer Pau Torres, who is on Real Madrid’s transfer wishlist.

It is too early to tell if Enrique will actually leave Ramos off his squad for the Euros, and it is very difficult to see that happening, given Ramos’ quality and importance to the team.

Not only is he a great defender and leader, but his passing and ability on set pieces (and penalties) are just as vital to Spain’s attack. So if there’s a chance he can play and help the team, why wouldn’t they squeeze him into the roster?

We’ll see how Ramos recovers from his current injury, but it is nonetheless interesting to hear rumblings that Enrique is contemplating Ramos’ omission on the grounds of injury/sharpness.
