According to a recent report from AS, Marcelo is one of 10 players who could be sold by Real Madrid in the summer 2021 transfer window. The Brazilian is a distinguished Blancos player who was one of the most highly-rated left backs in his prime.
The foreign player to have made the second-highest appearances for the club has his contract expiring by the end of the 2021/22 season. There haven’t been any reports of extensions and it is looking like Real Madrid may try to get something back before his contract with the club runs out.
Marcelo has indeed been a key player for years in the club. His contributions will always be remembered for good. But, all good things need to end, so does Marcelo’s time in the Royal White kit. Here are three reasons why moving on from the aging veteran is a logical move to make.
1. Dropping performances
As simple as it sounds, a player needs to put up worthy performances to stay in a club. While it kills me to be this harsh, Marcelo hasn’t done his job in his recent outings. It is no surprise that he had lost his starting spot to Ferland Mendy early on in the season.
Upon Mendy’s absence, he did feature for the club at times as a wing-back and at times at the more familiar left back role, but his contribution to play has been negligible. Apart from a cross that resulted in an equalizer against Chelsea after three headers being won, nothing really comes to mind.
Very recently, the young Castilla left back Miguel Gutierrez has been starting in his spot and has done a fine job. It thus seems like Ferland Mendy and Gutierrez providing enough stability to the left back position for Madrid and that makes Marcelo’s case for a farewell from the beloved club even stronger.
