3. Squad development

Real Madrid has several promising players other than Ferland Mendy in their squad who could replace Marcelo in the future as the first-choice left-back. While Mendy is the current first-choice, Miguel Gutierrez has emerged as an option to provide him some backup and required rotation

Sergio Reguilon, who joined Tottenham Hotspurs from Real Madrid on a five-year deal, has a roughly 32 million euro buyback clause in his contract. So his return still could be a possibility, even if it is admittedly unlikely. The point here is that there is enough talent available to take up the left-back position and Marcelo’s absence can go less felt.

Secondly, for any young player to develop, they must be given game time. And I can’t stress enough how important it is to pass down the torch. Marcelo, by the looks of it, is at that stage in his career. Sacrificing his place in the first team for a promising young player is what a sincere club servant like him should do.

If he leaves the capital, it would mean that young Miguel Gutierrez could be given more game time rotationally with Ferland Mendy, and with the promise that the Castilla player has shown in his limited first-team appearances, it is almost certain for the project to work out in Real Madrid’s favor.
