Rennes CM Eduardo Camavinga

As with Jules Kounde, Eduardo Camavinga isn’t really a priority for Real Madrid in the summer transfer window. Real Madrid have Antonio Blanco rising up the ranks, Fede Valverde already not starting every match, and Martin Odegaard set to return from a half-season loan spell in North London.

But there’s something special about Camavinga. The 18-year-old burst onto the scene and onto Real Madrid’s radar after a stellar performance for Rennes against PSG as a 16-year-old, and he’s only increased his reputation since then. The vast majority of Madridistas know who he is.

Camavinga isn’t the only midfielder from Ligue 1 on Real’s watchlist. Monaco’s Aurelien Tchouameni had the best season of any young midfielder in France, while Houssem Aouar could be a 30 million euro bargain.

Yet when we are discussing raw talent and upside, there is nobody more appealing than Camavinga, whose all-around ability and defensive work could be huge for Real in the future. It’s not an ideal situation for him based on playing time and pressure, but if Real want to make it work, they can find a way.

Furthermore, if Real Madrid REALLY want Camavinga, then this is the only time to buy him. He has one year left on his deal, and Rennes must sell. If Los Blancos don’t sign him, he could go to Bayern Munich and become the next great center midfielder there, following in the footsteps of Michael Ballack, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Toni Kroos, Thiago Alcantara, and Joshua Kimmich in recent years. (But let’s not get too ahead of ourselves, Camavinga does have work to do!)

While Camavinga could be a luxury signing like Kounde, his talent and upside make him the dream pick in midfield, even after an inconsistent 2020-2021 campaign.
