Real Madrid may be interested in signing another center back in the summer 2021 transfer window. Although Eder Militao has been a huge breakout star down the stretch of the 2020-2021 season, Los Blancos are faced with the prospect of losing both Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos this summer. Therefore, they could add another rising player at the position, even though they are on the precipice of welcoming David Alaba to their defense.

So let’s take a look at handful of young central defenders who may be worth Real’s time. Because of the economic realities, I caution that a signing is not likely. But it is plausible. Thus, we might as well run down some talented names.

5. Lille CB Sven Botman

Sven Botman has been one of the breakout stars of Ligue 1 and a real standout at the heart of the Lille defense next to veteran Jose Fonte. Les Dogues are one step away from winning the league title over PSG, which was a nearly unthinkable achievement heading into the 2020-2021 season.

The 21-year-old Dutch defender is overshadowed by a countryman at the position of the same age in Serie A, but he is a rising star in his own right. Botman is averaging 1.6 interceptions per game and has been dribbled past just 0.3 times per game, according to WhoScored.com. An athletic, no-nonsense defender, Botman will be linked to many big clubs this summer. Real Madrid should be among those interested. The Premier League seems to be calling his name, but Botman is a name for Madridistas to know.
