Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has been linked with a move to Real Madrid since Borussia Dortmund days. The Polish striker was close to signing for Los Blancos in the summer of 2014 after Dortmund beat the Merengues in the semi-final of the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League edition.

Florentino Perez was highly impressed with Lewandowski’s performance when he netted four goals against Real at the Signal Iduna Park in the first leg. He was so impressed, that Perez even personally met the player following the club’s elimination at the Santiago Bernabeu.

However, the potential move to sign Robert Lewandowski in 2014 when Carlo Ancelotti took over the reins was called off. The club deemed the Polish striker as a surplus to their requirements after already having Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, and Gareth Bale, who had just been signed from Tottenham Hotspur for a world record transfer fee then.

Fast forward to today, Sky Germany reports via AS that Robert Lewandowski is still keen on completing his dream move to the Spanish capital and his agent is listening to offers at the moment.

But do Real Madrid require the signing of Robert Lewandowski?

At the age of 32, Lewandowski is still firing all cylinders and has scored 40 league goals in 28 appearances this season in the Bundesliga, averaging a goal every 59 minutes. These are certainly fantastic numbers for a striker and Real have missed a player of this calibre since Ronaldo’s departure.

However, the probable signing of Lewandowski is not the need of the hour at Real Madrid right now. The Merengues require a goal-scoring winger after Eden Hazard has failed to live up to the expectations. Kylian Mbappe has been touted to complete a move this summer and the 22-year-old is the priority for the upcoming transfer window.

Moreover, Real have Karim Benzema as their striker who has been nothing short of exceptional for the past few seasons. Benzema has been the talismanic leader in the frontline and the 33-year-old is surprisingly getting better with age.

The Frenchman is on a contract until the summer of 2022 with Real Madrid and Los Blancos could consider replacing Benzema when his contract runs out with Erling Haaland whose release clause at Borussia Dortmund is valued at just 75 million euros from 2022 onwards. Having said that, the rumours linking Lewandowski seem exciting, but it is not the signing that Madrid require.
