Real Madrid vs. Villarreal: 4 takeaways as Los Blancos win but lose the title
Atletico Madrid deserved to win the title, not Real Madrid
Before I get to the crux of this point, I want to briefly praise Real Madrid, specifically manager Zinedine Zidane. Months ago after Real’s embarrassing Copa del Rey exit to Alcoyano, so many people wrote off this team. I wasn’t sure they could compete in LaLiga either. But Zidane kept Real competitive until the very last day, with his team pulling a rabbit out of the hat against Villarreal on Matchday 38.
You have to say that Zidane maximized his squad this season, considering all the injuries and the lack of any signings this past summer. Real’s squad was not as good as Atletico Madrid’s. And therefore, Atleti, who were able to be more consistent this season from start to finish, deserved to win the league title.
That shows you Real have work to do this summer as an organization when it comes to fortifying the squad and adding star talent, particularly in the attack to help take some pressure off the overworked Karim Benzema. As in, he was literally overworked at points this season and had to take time off!
Atleti deserve credit for their consistency, strategy, and team-building. Real Madrid deserve credit for their heart and the passion showed by a few players. But the collective is lacking. Changes do need to be made this summer so that a handful of players don’t have to carry a squad burdened by people who do not meet the standards of quality at this historic club.
