Real Madrid center back Sergio Ramos still has not signed a new contract with the club, as he will be an impending free agent now that the 2020-2021 season is over. In theory, he could even sign with a club now, just as Gini Wijnaldum and Sergio Aguero have agreed to terms with rivals Barcelona. Of course, Ramos wouldn’t go to a rival, but a team like, say, PSG would love to swoop in for the world-class defender.
Ramos’ situation is even more precarious now. Because his manager, Zinedine Zidane, is reportedly leaving the club, according to the ultra-reliable Fabrizio Romano.
How might Zidane’s departure impact Ramos’ situation?
Well, it certainly isn’t going to help matters.
According to Anton Meana speaking on El Larguero, Sergio Ramos’ chances of re-signing with Real Madrid are even lower if Zinedine Zidane does not continue with the club. And if Romano reports it, it sure looks like it’s the truth.
Has Sergio Ramos been waiting to see if Zinedine Zidane would continue as Real Madrid manager?
Zidane leaving hurts the club in so many ways, and Ramos is a part of the “old guard” that won three straight Champions League titles with Zizou. He and the manager have a great bond together, as we have seen in the last two seasons.
There is still a lot of hope Ramos will stay in Madrid. That’s always been the logical conclusion, and it seems more logical now, given Ramos doesn’t have better financial offers elsewhere. But since he hasn’t re-upped yet, he may be holding out for something else. Maybe one of those factors he was waiting on was Zidane’s continuity, so that’s something to watch out for.
Saying goodbye to both Zidane and Ramos in the same summer would be heartbreaking for Madrdisitas, who are already prepared to wave goodbye to club legend Marcelo and another player many have grown attached to in Isco.
Again, we can only hope the captain stays. But Madridistas must be prepared for a lot of changes this summer. Considering Florentino Perez is a potential point of contention in both the Zidane and Ramos cases, questions will also be asked of the president in the coming months if he cannot balance the departures with significant additions.
