Real Madrid: Ranking the 10 best goals of the 2020/21 season
2 – When Chelsea was struck by Benzema’s brilliance
Another big game at the Alfredo Di Stefano against an English club, with the same old rainy background that became a common sight as the season progressed. But the scenario was different as Chelsea were dominating Real Madrid at their home, unlike Liverpool. They scored an early goal to take the lead, and Real Madrid’s midfield and the attack had no answer to Chelsea’s organized press and defence.
But then a man stepped up for Real Madrid with the situation demanding so. It was the same man who had always stepped up when his team needed a hero, who none other than Karim Benzema. The difficult game demanded a moment of magic from Benzema, and he did the same by scoring a thunderous volley in the 29th minute.
Benzema chest controlled the headed pass from Militao after a lot of tussle for the ball in the box and then launched a right-footed rocket on the turn, without wasting a single second. The effort just flew past everyone like a bullet, with Eduardo Mendy’s expression being enough to show how fiercely the ball was struck by Benzema.
Real Madrid couldn’t win the game and the tie, and they were tactically outclassed by Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea. But Benzema did write his name into the history books with his goal as he became the fourth-highest goalscorer in the history of the UEFA Champions League, tied with Raul.
