10 – Marco Asensio’s immediate impact against Sevilla

This goal looks like a simple one to the eye, but this goal came at an important time when Real Madrid was losing 0-1 to Sevilla. And this goal can show you how little things are enough to create such simple goalscoring opportunities.

In the 67th minute, Fede Valverde won the ball near the halfway line, and Benzema leads the counterattack in a 4v4 situation, and then released Asensio down the right. Asensio could’ve taken a first-time right-footed shot, but he was slow and he was closed down by Kounde. Asensio was being taken towards the touchline due to Kounde’s pressure, but he passed it back to Casemiro who was joining the attack.

Here’s where the magic begins. Casemiro passes the ball to an open Kroos, who changes his body shape to a shooting posture, and took few touches to free himself from the onrushing Ivan Rakitic. But Sevilla knew he wouldn’t be taking a shot with bodies ahead of him. Casemiro made a quick run into the box expecting a return pass from Kroos and knowing Kroos’ abilities two of Sevilla’s defenders tracked Casemiro’s run.

But Toni Kroos outwitted everyone and he chose to pass to a recovering Asensio, who came back onside and whose first-time effort was perfectly placed to beat Bono at his near post. Credit goes to everyone on this goal. Valverde and Benzema started the counter, Asensio took it forward and kept it alive, Casemiro created space for Asensio by drawing defenders with his run, Kroos didn’t reveal his intentions until the final moment, and Asensio finished the move with his great left-footed shot. These small details do make this ‘team goal’ so special.
