5- Benzema’s backheel goal that stunned Barcelona

What should I say about this goal? It was such a brilliant team goal from Real Madrid that Barcelona had no answer to the determined Real Madrid’s attacking force.

Everything started with a theatrical dive from Leo Messi in the 14th minute, as the Argentine looked to win a free kick outside Real Madrid’s box. But the referee Gil Manzano didn’t fall into his trap, and Fede Valverde won the ball. After a series of exchanges between Militao, Kroos, Modric, Casemiro that beat Barcelona’s press, the Uruguayan was released down the right flank.

But then Fede made a positive run into Barcelona’s half beating Alba and Pedri on the way, which produced the change in momentum of the attack. The relentless motor got into a dangerous position, but he chose to release Lucas who made the underlapping run. Lucas then got to the byline and made a low cross with his right, with Benzema just getting ahead of Araujo.

Araujo forced Benzema towards the near post which made a first-time effort difficult for the Frenchman. Difficult situations like these bring the best out of experienced professionals, and the same happened in Benzema’s case. He did something no Barcelona player would’ve expected, as he chose to divert Lucas’ perfect low cross towards the net with an excellent backheel flick. Barcelona were stunned by Benzema’s intelligence, as Real Madrid went on to win the Clasico 2-1.
