Real Madrid: Ranking the 10 best goals of the 2020/21 season
4- When Luka Modric took matters into his own hands against Shakhtar
It was a horrible night at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano, as Real Madrid were losing 3-0 to Shakhtar Donestk at half-time, in their first Champions League Group stage fixture of the season. Zidane had heavily rotated the team keeping in mind the Clasico scheduled in three days, but the players couldn’t repay his faith with a terrible attacking and defensive display.
Things continued to be the same in the second half as Real Madrid couldn’t produce anything in attack. At that point in time, Luka Modric said enough is enough and took matters into his own hands. He picked up the ball from Marcelo down the left, and then made his way to the middle, before manufacturing a powerful shot from 30 yards away. The serving shot ended in the top right corner, and the helpless keeper could only watch the ball fizzed past him.
Modric’s goal did initiate a mini-comeback, as the substitute Vinicius Jr went on to add another one. But it wasn’t enough, as Real faltered 3-2 at their home, despite the fight. But all this doesn’t change the fact that this goal is one of the best of this season.
