Real Madrid: Ranking the five best players of the 2020-2021 season
2. Thibaut Courtois
Had Real Madrid won any silverware this season, or if they ended the season on a positive note, both fans and the club management must thank one absolute wall in defense, Thibaut Courtois. Yes, there were other important players on the pitch, but, Courtois did it consistently, every single time out.
He played every single match in the league for Real Madrid, registering a whopping 51 appearances in all competitions this season. He also secured two MOTM outings among them, and let me tell you, it is not easy for a Goalkeeper.
Playing behind a defense plagued by injuries, the Belgian maintained an 81.1 percent successful saves in La Liga. He conceded only 28 goals of the 111 shots that he faced on target, per FBref.com. He ended with 17 clean sheets in the league just one behind Atleti’s Jan Oblak, the golden glove winner.
Certain instances stay frame-locked after the end of the season. The away leg at Anfield for example, Courtois saved brilliant shots from the likes of James Milner and Georginio Wijnaldum. He also did put up an ‘A-show’ against Getafe when Real played an unusual starting XI.
For the majority of the times that Real Madrid conceded, the 29-year-old wasn’t at fault. He thus remains the best campaigner between the sticks for Real Madrid this season.
