Real Madrid Transfers: Achraf Hakimi asking price is too much
When Real Madrid sold Achraf Hakimi to Inter Milan last summer, most Madridistas were upset by the sale. They felt 40 million euros was far too low for a player who had reached incredible heights in 2019-2020 at Borussia Dortmund and could have played a key role on the right-hand side at fullback and winger last season.
The move looked even worse in the context of how the team fared in 2020-2021 with injuries at right back and woeful play at right winger. And now, it looks worse still, when we look at Hakimi’s asking price after a “Team of the Season” caliber performance for Serie A champions Inter.
According to a report from Fabrizio Romano, Inter want more than 60 million euros for Achraf Hakimi. And PSG, who have very deep pockets, seem to be hot on his heels. We know how much they could use Hakimi, with Alessandro Florenzi on his way back to Roma. And PSG love their attacking fullbacks.
The key here is Romano is saying the asking price is 60 million euros at a minimum. Calciomercato.com’s Daniele Longo tweeted that Inter is requesting 70 million euros for the world-class right wing back.
PSG can make an offer to Inter that Real Madrid cannot match
Real Madrid have the right of first refusal for Hakimi. This has been pointed out as a way of softening the blow of selling Hakimi, but it is actually not relevant now if Inter are asking for this much and PSG are willing to pay.
Because let’s be real here. Can Real actually afford to pay 70 million euros for Hakimi? I don’t think so. That’s a ton of money in this economy, and Real are already up against it to save up for a top forward, specifically Kylian Mbappe.
Real Madrid thus cannot pay out 70 million euros for Hakimi. If they do that, then how can they afford the more than 100 million euros they’d have to give to PSG for Mbappe? I don’t see how it happens, and, therefore, I think Inter’s asking price of potentially 60-80 million euros is too much for Los Blancos to meet.
It’s a sad story for Madridistas, because Hakimi should have been shining for Real Madrid in 2020-2021 and beyond. They made a great decision to loan him to Dortmund, who showed faith in Hakimi and helped him become a star.
Inter, though, reaped the rewards last season after Real sold him for cheap and signed nobody in that same summer. Now, PSG look set to benefit from Hakimi’s brilliance, too. Real Madrid are able to match any offer due to the right of first refusal clause, but if PSG can give Inter an offer they know Real cannot match, then that clause is absolutely useless.
Unfortunately, I think that’s the path we are headed, especially since PSG must be angry and ready to make big signings after losing Ligue 1 to Lille.
