Real Madrid: The worst manager candidate is no longer a worry
A few months ago, reports first emerged that a surprising name had interest in taking the Real Madrid job if Zinedine Zidane were to leave at the end of the season.
Well, Zidane did step down, and, thus, German national team manager Joachim Low was immediately mentioned as a possible replacement because of these preceding rumors. But no Madridista took Low seriously as a candidate. They certainly didn’t want him in the club as the next manager, particularly with better options like Antonio Conte and Mauricio Pochettino linked.
Max Allegri is off the table, as he has replaced Andrea Pirlo at Juventus. That’s a blow to Real Madrid, but the fans will be happier to hear that a far less attractive option was no longer an option. And it sounds like he was never an option.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Florentino Perez never viewed Joachim Low as a candidate for the Real Madrid job. That comes as no surprise, both because Low has never shown the club coaching pedigree befitting of this position, nor is he the kind of manager Perez would seemingly want to work with. Perez is a guy who likes to make headlines and go for the best name possible if he can.
Joachim Low probably didn’t even have actual interest in Real Madrid either
On top of that, Low himself told BILD’s Christian Falk, albeit when specifically discussing rumors linking him to Real’s rivals Barcelona, that he wouldn’t manage ANY club next season.
That makes sense, too. Low is set to step down after years of managing the German national team, and his legacy is on the line this summer at the Euros. This coaching job is already stressful, and it is about to reach peak levels of stress this summer. If he wanted to get back into club coaching, he’d have to quickly make a turnaround in the middle of the summer. Not ideal.
So if Real Madrid never wanted Low and Low never had his eyes on coaching a club, who started these rumors? Why were so many usually reliable outlets spreading information that Low had interest in Real and not killing the rumors of Low as a candidate when Zidane officially left?
The transfer window for players and coaches is just that damn silly. Any Real Madrid fans who were seriously worried that their club would hire a guy with unimpressive club coaching experience can now breathe a sigh of relief. Low isn’t coming to Madrid.
