Real Madrid were a competitive team in every major competition besides the Copa del Rey this season. Despite a myriad of injuries and precisely zero summer signings, Los Blancos fought in LaLiga and the Champions League until just about the very end.

Yet they were held back significantly by an anemic attack that was carried by Karim Benzema and boasted a defensive-focused player as its second-leading scorer in league play. Yeah, that’s not nearly good enough.

Let’s take a look back at how all the forwards who played significant minutes did this season and grade them from 1 to 10.

LW Eden Hazard

We begin with the biggest name among the forwards, Eden Hazard. The Belgian had a couple of quality performances, namely against Huesca and Deportivo Alaves in LaLiga. But he was left wanting in the big matches. Although the fact that he was coming off an injury may soften the assessment, Hazard was notably invisible in Real Madrid’s second leg loss to Chelsea in the Champions League semifinals.

And in all honesty, Hazard didn’t make an impact in any big match for Los Blancos. The 2020-2021 season was even more disappointing than Hazard’s debut season. How much can he be blamed for his struggles? To be fair, a large chunk of the blame goes to the injuries he has no control over. But I cannot justify a grade beyond a very low one due to the minimal impact he’s made, especially in comparison to his wages and expectations.
